The Govan Stones project is looking for friendly, enthusiastic people to help us provide an excellent visitor experience at the Govan Stones heritage centre. You don't require any previous knowledge of Govan's medieval history, or previous museum experience - all the relevant information is included in our fun, volunteer training package.
The Govan Stones visitor centre is home to 31 ancient carved stone sculptures a world-class collection - and some of the only evidence that remains of the Christian and Viking peoples who lived in Strathclyde over a thousand years ago. We provide tours and talks for adults as well as fun archaeology/ heritage themed activities for children. Additionally, the visitor centre often hosts concerts, lectures, film screenings and art exhibitions. The Govan Stones visitor centre is free for all visitors, with a focus on community engagement and non-discrimination. We strive to ensure the visitor centre is approachable and welcoming as well as educational and informative. The current project is supported by the European Social Fund/ Scottish Government's 'Aspiring Communities Fund' and is dedicated to the principles of equal opportunities, social inclusion, and environmental stability.
The Govan Stones visitor centre offers a variety of roles and activities to best suit your volunteering interests. Many of our volunteers have enjoyed training up to become tour-guides, but this is not compulsory. If you aren't interested in tour-guiding, you might prefer providing a warm-welcome more generally to visitors at the front-desk. Many volunteers prefer to assist with our education and activities programme providing fun history-themed art and learning activities for all ages. You might enjoy providing community outreach and engagement activities at external venues across the city. Alternatively, if you’d rather help behind the scenes, you might like to get involved in our social media or assist with research.
