Description

Out of School Hours Learning, supported study clubs were set up to contribute to the personal development of children and young people whose educational progress has been impaired by social or personal disadvantages. One method of doing this is to match a trained volunteer tutor who is prepared to spend an hour a week giving educational support to a child or young person.

Volunteer tutors are not ‘experts’; they are ordinary people of all ages, from all walks of life, eg young and old, quiet and extrovert, students, professionals, factory workers, unemployed and retired people.

To be a volunteer tutor it is important that you are:

• reliable, consistent and patient
• sympathetic in approach
• a good listener
• flexible
• have a capacity for fun
